Diederik Burke is a teacher and dancer of contact improvisation based in Amsterdam, where he teaches classes at Studio 100 (Zaal 100). His passion for movement, motion, and emotion radiating from the heart, grounded in the body’s center of gravity and expanding in all directions, was born in childhood. Guided by his parents into the art of Judo at age six, he began dancing at twenty-two, first modern dance and later tango, before discovering contact improvisation, which became what he describes as the true love and guiding force of his life.
Over more than 40 years of practice, Diederik has merged this multidisciplinary art with his other passions, including martial arts, aquatic dance, bodywork, yoga, and Chi Kong, all supporting and enriching his dance of contact improvisation. He has taught mainly across Europe with his home base in Amsterdam, where he is co-founder and organizer of the Amsterdam-Jam contact improvisation community, facilitating weekly classes and jams for more than 25 years. His personal style of dancing and teaching is characterized by a deep sensing application of movement, connection, and expressive motion, rooted in joy.
