Otto is a dancer and teacher based in Groningen, the Netherlands. He has been dancing since 2004, exploring a wide range of styles and practices including contemporary dance, movement improvisation, Gaga dance and partner acrobatics.
He first encountered Contact Improvisation around 2007/2008 and found it genuinely shocking. Coming from a background of technical classes with precise steps, the openness of CI was a leap into the unknown. It took him three months before he dared to return. After that second time, he was sold, and began attending classes, jams and festivals across the Netherlands and Germany as often as he could.
As a teacher, Otto likes to offer his students practical tools: concrete techniques and pathways to use within the dance. He combines this with an emphasis on relaxation, breathing and gentle introspection – because in CI it is easy to lose yourself in the dance or the other, and staying in contact with yourself is just as important as staying in contact with your partner.
